Academician Architect Urban Planner Conservation Consultant

Prof. AGK Menon has undertaken several pioneering urban conservation projects in India on behalf of INTACH. He has also authored documents that have set guidelines for conservation practice in India, including The Charter for the Conservation of Unprotected Architectural Heritage & Sites in India, 2004. As the co founder of TVB School of Habitat Studies, he remains a passionate interlocutor in mediating the development of Delhi as a Heritage City.

Sheila Sri Prakash
Founder and Chief Architect, Shilpa Architects

The first Indian architect to serve on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Design Innovation, Sheila Sri Prakash formulated the Reciprocal Design Index in 2013 to establish, document and incentivise sustainable design of cities. She is widely consulted on matters of urban sustainability by several governments and is closely associated with the Chennai Smart City project, as an Independent Director and Urban Expert. Last year, she was awarded the Bene Merenti Medallion by the University of Architecture and Urbanism, Bucharest, Romania, for championing the cause of Sustainability at the World Economic Forum, Global Environment Fund and the UN Habitat III.

An Aga Khan Award nominee, Welandawe focuses on projects that have a strong social agenda and a sustainable programme such as Fernando House and Nelungs Art Centre in Sri Lanka.

Neera Adarkar
Architect (Sir JJ College of Architecture) Industrial Design (IIT Bombay) Urban Conservationist Chairperson, Society of Environment and Architecture

A practicing architect based in Mumbai, Neera is currently running a joint practice under Adarkar Associates, engaged in architecture, planning, conservation and urban research. Having actively participated in the struggle for Textile Mill Lands of Mumbai, her work emerges from a deep concern of social, urban and gender issues. She has been an active participant in the Women’s Movement over the last three decades. A recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award, IIT Bombay, 2013 she has co-authored with Meena Menon ‘One Hundred Years One Hundred Voices: Oral History of Millworkers of Girangaon’ (2004) and has edited an anthology: ‘The Chawls of Mumbai: Galleries of Life’ (2011). Neera has contributed essays to many publications and has delivered lectures at universities and conferences.

She has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the department of Urbanism and Architecture of the Katholieke University, Belgium.

B.V. Doshi
Founder & Chief Architect, Vastu-Shilpa Academician Institution Builder

As one of India's most influential 20th century architects, and an important collaborator of both Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, B.V. Doshi has an impressive portfolio spanning over 70 years. Through the work of his studio Vastu-Shilpa, he has established himself as a key figure in the development of low-cost housing and modern city planning in India, championing architecture that is true to modernist principles as well as local traditions. Doshi’s modernist ideas can be found at NIFT, New Delhi, his workspace Amdavadni Gufa, and CEPT in Ahmedabad.

Mahendra Raj

Engineers lay the founding stones for architecture. And in his 60-year career, Mahendra Raj has been one on several iconic projects. Whether it is Le Corbusier’s sculptural high court in Chandigarh, B.V. Doshi's Tagore Memorial Hall in Ahmedabad or Raj Rewal's Hall of Nations at Pragati Maidan in Delhi, the structural engineer has left his indelible mark. The 92-year-old has also contributed to the cutting-edge airports in Hyderabad and Jaisalmer.

Brinda Somaya
Principal Architect and Managing Director, Somaya&Kalappa Consultants (SNK) Urban Conservationist

Upon completion of her Bachelors of Architecture degree from Mumbai University and her Master of Arts from Smith College, USA, she started her firm, Somaya and Kalappa Consultants. She is the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from her American alma mater. She is also the recipient of the Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the Indian Institute of Architects, and is the Chair Person of the Board of Governors, School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada. She has recently been appointed by Cornell University, U.S.A. as the A.D. White Professor-at-large.

Mr. Salhotra is a MBA Graduate from MIT’s Sloan School of Management. While at MIT, he led a team of Sloan Fellows for re-strategising United Parcel Service’s business. He has a number of publications to his credit, including one co-authored with Deputy Dean of MIT Sloan School. Mr. Salhotra has been appointed Chevalier de lÓrdre national du Merite (Knight in the National Order of Merit) by the President of the French Republic during May 2015. As the head of Alstom Transport, Mr. Salhotra has been pushing for promoting Alstom light rail turnkey solution for Tier II cities in India and sensitising the Indian customers on the need to adopt solution based on life cycle costs rather than on capital costs only. As a result, a number of cities such as Trivandrum, Kozhikode, Nagpur and Delhi suburbia are actively looking at inducting the Alstom’s Axon is Light Rail Transport solution.

Architect Bijoy Ramachandran is a partner at multidisciplinary design studio HundredHands which he co-founded with Ar. Sunitha Kondur in 2003. HundredHands handles projects ranging from large scale master plans to architecture, interior design and environmental/graphic design. The studio’s approach is grounded in the search for contextually appropriate solutions. Special emphasis is given to the response to climate, the existing scale and character of the context, appropriate use of materials and construction techniques, and the development of the project aesthetic as a result of these specific conditions.

Ar. Ashish Acharjee
Architect, Critic and Activist

Graduating from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1988, Acharjee started working with Architect Charles Correa in Mumbai as a trainee. While with Correa, he worked on several landmark projects like the ‘Jawahar Kala Kendra’ in Jaipur, ‘Cavelossim Beach Resort’ at Goa, ‘Rehabilitation Township’ at Bagalkot in Karnataka and MRF Corporate Headquarters at Madras. In 1990, joined a subsidiary of Gujarat Ambuja Cements Limited and assumed a key role in designing a large Real Estate and Tourism project near Kolkata. He started his professional practice in 1998 and divides his time between practice, activism, research and writing. He is also consultant to the Heritage Commission and Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, West Bengal.

Er. Sanjiv Parekh

A Civil Engineer from Jadavpur University in West Bengal, Parekh has a double M.E. in Structures and Earth Quake Engineering & Retrofitting. An architect engaged in teaching and voluntary work, Sonia Gupta has been educated at Jadavpur University Kolkata and Lund University, Sweden. Having also been active in professional practice in the offices of D.S. Architects, she is now Associate Professor at Amity University, Kolkata. Through Centre for Built Environment, a knowledge-based nonprofit professional body in her city, she has sustained her interest in housing issues, rain water harvesting and sanitation for the urban poor. She has made a number of presentations in conferences both in India and abroad and is also an active member of the Indian Institute of Architects, West Bengal Chapter.

Architect, Planner and Educationist

As an apprentice of Louis Kahn, he has authored several theoretical articles and lectured at various universities in India and other parts of the world. As Founder Director of KRV institute for conceptual architecture in Mumbai, he has been on the jury panel for several national architectural competitions. His recent book “In Conversation” with Ar. B.V. Doshi elaborates contours of contemporary Indian architecture.

In 1967 he was elected as an associate member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, London, UK. His innovative approach to design and constant search for efficient structural solutions secured him an excellent reputation in India, post his return in 1968. Some of these are - The Bombay Stock Exchange, The ICICI Building in Mumbai, Public Utility Building in Bangalore, MRF Headquarters in Madras, The Andheri Sports Complex and the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and the IFCI Building in New Delhi.

Ar. Raj Rewal
Veteran Architect, Urban Planner

He graduated from the Delhi School of Architecture. Raj Rewal worked at Michel Ecochards's office in Paris before starting his practice in New Delhi in 1962. Among his better-known projects are the Hall of Nations at the Pragati Maidan Exhibition Centre, Asiad Village, the Parliament Library in New Delhi and NCBS (National Centre for Biological Sciences) campus at Bangalore. In 1986, he became the curator of the exhibition “Traditional Architecture in India” for the Government of India in Paris. He also designed an architectural college (SIUPA) in Rohtak and is Head of Members in academic council.

Mr. Sameer Jain

An IIT Alumni, Sameer’s experiences in strategy and development roles have ushered him a technology acumen needed to sieve through the layers of planning and implementation at city scale. His current role as Director of Government Advisory for Smart Cities have enabled him to be involved with several smart city proposals put forth by Indian Cities.

Mr. Sanjay Seth
Senior Director, Sustainable Habitat Division

Sanjay Seth is Senior Director of the Sustainable Habitat Division with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). He is also the Chief Executive Officer & Secretary of GRIHA Council which administers the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment. Prior to joining TERI, he worked with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Ministry of Power, Government of India and headed the vertical on Building Energy Efficiency. He was also the interim Secretary of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and responsible for the administration and financial management of the organisation. In this capacity, he provided oversight to the implementation of policies and programmes of BEE as well as the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE), and all international bilateral/multilateral cooperation programmes. He also represented BEE on the Board of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) as Director.

Nimish Patel & Parul Zaveri, established Abhikram as a Planning, Architecture, Conservation and Interiors consultancy firm in 1979, on their return to India, with a view to explore a design direction and design process which make Built Environment, functionally, psychologically, environmentally and spiritually, more balanced, contextual and comfortable. One of the directions of their practice is in designing the Built Environment using passive means for Human Comfort Systems. Torrent Research Centre, in Gandhinagar (winner of the JIIA-ANCHOR Awards 2000, and of the IAB Designing for Corporate Culture Award 2004) is an example of their attempts in this direction.

Chitra Vishwanath
Principal Architect, Biome Environmental Solutions

Born in Banares, India to a sculptor father and a talented housewife mother, Chitra Vishwanath was directed towards architecture as a professional choice by them. After studying Civil Engineering in Nigeria and Architecture at School of Architecture CEPT India, she started her practice in 1990 in Bangalore as Chitra Vishwanath Architects working exclusively on ecological and economical design solutions. In 2008 the firm integrated with Rainwaterclub to become a broader-based organisation working on both architecture and sustainable water designs. In the past twenty years Biome has executed nearly 500 projects, from the big to the very small.

Gopal Shankar
Founder Chairman, Habitat Technology Group

Shankar received his degree in architecture from the College of Engineering in Thiruvananthapuram and later M.S from Birmingham School of Architecture UK, with first rank and distinction. He is the Founder Chairman of Habitat Technology Group and has made path – breaking, original contributions in the field of housing and architecture, by spearheading a ‘people’s housing movement’ based on cost effective, sustainable and eco-friendly building technologies. Shankar’s contributions have won him numerous awards including the Padma Shree Award for the best tsunami initiatives in India instituted by UNDP in 2007. He also won the National Award for Slum Rehabilitation, instituted by Ministry of Poverty Alleviation, Government of India, in 2004.

Nuru Karim
Principal, Founding Partner, LIVE(Laboratory for Interactive Visionary Environments)

Nuru Karim, received his Masters in Architecture and Urbanism from the Architectural Association [AADRL], London, United Kingdom in 2006. His work experience dates back to 1997. Apart from his own design practice, he has also taught Architecture Design Studios and conducted Design Workshops and is regularly invited as a guest jury member for several leading national design schools. He has won several awards and competitions for his work, most notably for an Architectural, Engineering Monument for Contemporary India organized by the TATA Group, for which his work ‘The Charkha’ was selected the winner. His projects were featured at the Architectural Association, DRL 10 in 2008. His writings and projects have been published in a variety of professional journals, both national and international, as well as through architectural exhibitions and conferences.

Pinkish Shah
Director, S+PS Architects

In 1997, Pinkish Shah set up the office S+PS Architects. Beyond designing interiors and furniture, the studio provides urban planning and architecture services as well. He studied at the Sir J.J. College of Architecture in Mumbai and perpetuated his studies up to the Master’s Degree in architecture at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, USA. Since the office’s formation, the firm has won numerous awards. Their projects have been published in several leading publications and magazines. Mr. Shah has also been a speaker at various design forums as well as jury member for architecture competitions. In 2004, the firm took part at the international exhibition “Roots and Trajectories – 4 Young Practices from India” at the University of New Mexico, which was also presented at the University of California in Berkeley, California, USA.

Girish Doshi
Founder Director, Navkar

After studying architecture at BKPS College of Architecture, Pune in 1979, Girish Doshi did a seven year long apprenticeship in Ahmedabad at studio Sangath with eminent architect Balkrishna Doshi. In 1987 he started his own architectural studio Navkar in Pune and has been doing various architectural projects in and around Pune. Girish Doshi has created energy conscious architectural design that includes residences, mass housing, educational institutions, hospitals and commercial complexes, private offices and interiors. His work displays a studied application of traditional principles of natural ventilation/ cooling and colours in architecture. His work has been widely published in journals and newspapers and academic outputs include lectures, seminars, exhibitions, writings and theoretical projects.

Pooja Prasad
CTARA, Research Head, B. Tech, IITB, M.S. Stanford University

Pooja Prasad is a research coordinator at the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA), I.I.T. Bombay, working in the area of rural drinking water access. She has a Masters in Operations Management (Stanford University) and a B.Tech. in Chemical Engineering (I.I.T. Bombay).

V N Heggade
GM, Technical Management, Gammon India Ltd.

V.N. Heggade, presently Member, Board of Management of Gammon India Limited has more than 27 years of experience in designing and constructing Bridges, Energy structures like Chimneys & Cooling towers, Marine structures and Hydraulic structures etc. He is the first engineer to receive ‘IABSE-Prize’ (International Association Of Bridge & Structural Engineers, Switzerland) from developing countries in addition to National awards like Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Centenary award from IRC; Prestressed concrete design award from Institution of Engineers, and ICI awards for best publications. He has passion for tall and long structures and he is an ardent advocate of sustainability and aesthetics in construction.

Dr. C. S. Viswanatha
Technical Advisor, Torsteel Research Foundation in India and Chairman, Civil-aid Technoclinic Pvt. Ltd.

Dr. C. S Viswanatha obtained his Master’s and Doctorate Degree from Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and subsequently served as a faculty member for nearly 17 years. He switched over from academics to Civil Engineering Consultancy in 1981 and since then has worked in the domain for 30 years. He is currently serving as the chairman of Civil Aid Technoclinic Pvt Ltd., which is now a Bureau Vertias Group Company. He has to his credit more than 80 papers in National and International Journals and has published ‘Torsteel Design Hand Book’ during 1988 through Tata McGraw Hill. He was awarded National Design Award by The Institution of Engineers (India) in 2005 as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award by Indian Concrete Institute in 2006. At present, he is the Chairman of Task Force on ‘Quality Assurance in Public Constructions’ setup by the Government of Karnataka wherein he has been accorded Minister of State status.
